My inspiration: A cynical view would be that heroes are people who do what we agree with, while a villain is somebody who gets in our way. Maybe heroes are born but I think that villains rarely are. They are shaped. I have tried to write a story about the shaping of a villain, giving her a chance to show how she didn’t start out that way. In fact, it’s possible that she had a great deal in common with the heroine of Jane Austen’s story. I started with the villain and worked backwards.
